The new ROI is Return on Individual.

AI made information cheap. Now the money is in the person who can use it without losing their judgment, energy, or soul.

This week, the AI race got louder. OpenAI released GPT-5.6 Sol on July 9, built for complex coding, research, science, cybersecurity, computer use, and design. SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5 on July 8, aimed at coding, agentic work, and knowledge work, with API pricing at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Anthropic brought Claude Fable 5 back globally on July 1 after export controls were lifted.

That is the surface story: better models, lower cost, more speed.

The real story is deeper. The machine side of work is becoming abundant. The human side is becoming scarce. AI can now help analyze, write, code, summarize, and decide. So the new question for every founder, CEO, parent, and team is not, "Who has the most information?" Everyone does. The question is, "Who has the human operating system to use it well?"

Cheap thinking changes the scoreboard

For years, business treated knowledge like the moat. Hire smart people. Buy better software. Collect more data. Move faster than the other team.

That still matters, but it is no longer enough. Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index looked at trillions of Microsoft 365 signals and 20,000 AI-using workers across 10 countries. It found that 49% of Copilot conversations now support cognitive work like analysis, problem solving, evaluation, and creative thinking. In plain English: AI is no longer just making slides. It is entering the thinking layer.

1/3

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol was competitive with Anthropic's Mythos Preview on ExploitBench while using about one-third of the output tokens. The cost of high-level cognition is falling fast.

When thinking gets cheaper, the value does not disappear. It moves. The profit moves from having answers to knowing which answer matters. The time savings move from typing faster to deciding cleaner. The energy savings move from doing less work to carrying less fear while doing the right work.

That is why information is not the moat anymore. Actual Intelligence is.

The bottleneck is the person

Gallup’s 2026 State of the Global Workplace found global employee engagement fell to 20% in 2025, its lowest level since 2020. Gallup estimates low engagement cost the world about $10 trillion in lost productivity. That is not a software problem. That is a human operating system problem.

The manager data is even sharper. Manager engagement dropped from 31% in 2022 to 22% in 2025. The people asked to hold the team together are the ones running out of charge. At the same time, Gallup found half of U.S. employees now use AI at least a few times a year, and 65% of workers in AI-adopting organizations say AI has a positive impact on productivity.

So we have a strange split. The tools are getting stronger, but the humans running the tools are more detached, more anxious, and less connected. That is the non-obvious point most AI coverage is missing.

AI is raising the ceiling, but weak human systems are lowering the floor.

A company can buy the newest model and still lose money if its people cannot tell the truth in meetings, manage conflict, recover from stress, or stay clear under pressure. A parent can give a child the best tutor on earth and still raise a distracted mind with no compass. A founder can automate half the workflow and still burn out because the inner workflow is broken.

ROI now means Return on Individual

The next trillion-dollar EQ insight is simple: the return is no longer just on capital, software, or headcount. The return is on the individual.

Return on Individual means this: how much more time, money, energy, peace, passion, partnership, profit, and purpose does one person create when their inner system is upgraded?

A person with character uses AI without cheating themselves. A person with critical thinking does not outsource judgment to a fluent answer. A person with emotional intelligence keeps the room steady when change scares people. A person with grit does not quit when the model gives a bad first draft. A person with elastic intelligence connects domains that the prompt never named.

That is the new moat. Not information. Not access. Not another dashboard. The moat is the human who can turn free information into wise action.

For business, that means AI training alone is too small. Train the operating system underneath the prompt: attention, honesty, courage, empathy, resilience, judgment, and purpose. That is where profit gets protected. That is where meetings get shorter. That is where good people stay. That is where culture stops being a poster and starts becoming a performance advantage.

For individuals, the message is even cleaner. You do not need to beat AI. You need to become the kind of person AI makes more powerful. If the machine gives you speed, bring direction. If it gives you answers, bring discernment. If it gives you leverage, bring character.

AI made information free. The remaining moat is Actual Intelligence. And the new ROI is Return on Individual.
