The price of machine intelligence just fell again. On July 30, OpenAI cut the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80%. The company says the small model can now do work that cost far more just one year ago, at almost nine times the speed. A business can buy more answers, drafts, checks, and actions for less money than ever.
That sounds like the whole profit story. It is not. Cheap intelligence removes one bottleneck and reveals another. The scarce thing is no longer the answer. It is the person who knows which problem matters, who should own it, and what a good result means. AI made information free. Now human clarity sets the price.
AI is crossing the lines on the org chart
New data shows how fast the old job map is breaking. On July 27, OpenAI studied more than 800,000 work messages from U.S. ChatGPT users. Of the messages tied to a specific job, 43.5% were about tasks linked to a different occupation. Customer service workers did marketing. Designers did engineering. Salespeople did finance. AI did not just speed up a job. It let one person reach into another job.
This is good news for time and money. A small-business owner can review a basic contract without waiting three days. A marketer can fix a simple web problem without opening a ticket. A salesperson can study a customer list without waiting for an analyst. Handoffs shrink. Ideas move. Energy comes back.
But there is a hidden cost. A job used to tell a person, “This is what you do.” When AI makes the border soft, that answer gets soft too. More ability can create less identity. People can touch more work while feeling less sure about what is truly theirs.
The missing layer is not software
Gallup’s July 21 workplace data exposes the gap. Only 31% of U.S. employees were engaged in the first half of 2026, the same as 2025. Low engagement costs the U.S. economy an estimated $2 trillion a year. Companies are adding AI, yet the human engine is still stuck.
OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna’s price by 80% on July 30, 2026. Machine intelligence got much cheaper. Human clarity did not.
The fix is not another license. It is management. Gallup found 48% engagement when employees said their manager actively supported AI use, compared with 30% when they did not. When frequent use, a clear plan, and manager support came together, engagement reached 53%. The tool stayed the same. The human setting changed.
This matches fresh psychology research. A June study in Personnel Review found that AI can act as a resource by giving people more freedom. It can also act as a demand by raising fear about job safety. The same tool can create power or pressure. What decides the result is whether the person feels trusted, useful, and in control.
That is the dot most AI plans miss. Task crossover raises output, but it also raises the need for role clarity. People need to know what they own, where they may explore, when they must check the machine, and why the work helps someone. Without that, speed becomes noise. With it, speed becomes profit and peace.
ROI now means Return on Individual
Old ROI asks, “How much did the tool save?” New ROI asks, “What did the person become able to do?” That is Return on Individual. Did the worker gain time, skill, energy, and judgment? Did the team gain trust? Did the customer get a better answer? Did the saved hour become profit, passion, peace, partnership, or purpose?
This is Josh’s trillion-dollar EQ bet. As information moves toward free, the value moves into the human operating system. Character tells the truth when AI makes a clean lie easy. Critical thinking checks a fast answer. Emotional intelligence sees the fear behind a quiet “yes.” Grit stays with the hard problem. Elastic intelligence moves across job lines without losing the mission.
Actual Intelligence is the moat that is left. Every rival can buy the same model. They cannot quickly copy a culture where people think clearly, speak honestly, adapt fast, and care about the result. That culture turns low-cost machine output into high-value human performance.
Bottom line: do not only lower the cost of intelligence. Raise the return on the individual using it. Start with the free Actual Intelligence diagnostic, then test the team with the free Culture Test at actualintelligenceos.com.
